Mayor Brown and Buffalo Wintermission to Launch “Winter Porch Sports”

Buffalo, NY - Mayor Byron W. Brown, the City of Buffalo Division of Citizen Services, and the Buffalo Wintermission Team are gearing up for the oficial kickoff of "Winter Porch Sports", sponsored by BlueCross BlueShield. This inclusive event for City residents is designed to increase physical activity and connectedness during the winter season. Winter Porch Sports will make its debut on Tuesday, February 2, 2021 at both Roosevelt Park and Schiller Park at 2 PM. Pre-registration is encouraged:

Mayor Brown stated, "Winter Porch Sports is yet another innovative and creative event that celebrates Buffalo's winter weather, while keeping us safe, motivated and connected. I thank BlueCross BlueShield for sponsoring this health and wellness initiative, which is part of Buffalo Wintermission. I encourage City residents to pre- register for the Winter Porch Sport kickoff, and join me for two hours of safe and healthy outdoor fun."

As part of the Winter Porch Sports kickoff, two video LED mobile billboards, secured on trucks, will roll into each park, showcasing local health and fitness trainers who will offer classes to participating residents. During the two hour program, which adheres to all CDC guidelines to ensure proper social distancing and gathering protocols, residents will be encouraged to take part in a series of group fitness activities,

Once the park programs end at 4 PM, the video LED mobile billboards will make their way into neighboring streets, offering residents the same physical fitness experience, only this time from the safety of their own porch! The idea is to get the entire neighborhood engaged to reach a common physical goal, while inspiring community engagement by being together and outdoors during the winter months. The trucks will be out on the streets from 4 PM until 8 PM.

Winter Porch Sports events are scheduled for every Tuesday and Wednesday through March, from 2 PM to 8 PM. On Tuesdays, events take place at Roosevelt and Schiller Parks, and surrounding residential streets. On Wednesdays, Winter Porch Sports events will take place at Front Park and Martin Luther King, Jr. Park, and surrounding residential streets.

In addition, the Police Athletic League of Buffalo will bring its PLAYSTREETS program to a number of the "Winter Porch Sports" events. At these park-only events, participating residents will enjoy live fitness instructors, as well as PAL sports equipment giveaways and other prize incentives. Be sure to pay attention to the schedule as the hours change when it's a Winter Porch Sports event, with PLAYSTREETS.

"This program is us bringing the engagement to the people, right where they are. We saw the need for accessible winter programming that meshed with the recent COVID-19 guidelines, and this is our response. I am excited to get the residents' feedback on our pilot program," stated Chief Executive Officer of Division of Citizen Services Oswaldo Mestre.

Executive Director Nekia Kemp stated, "The Police Athletic League of Buffalo is proud to be a part of providing outdoor activities and free sport's equipment through our PLAYSTREETS program as part of the Wintermission initiative. The winter session of Play Streets promotes fitness, health, and wellness to our city's youth and families during the winter months."

"BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York is pleased to continue our longstanding partnership with the City of Buffalo and our community partners, to bring Wintermission and the Winter Porch Sport initiative to the community," said Julie R. Snyder, Senior Vice President, Chief Marketing and Communications Officer. "It's more important now than ever for individuals to ind safe ways to stay active and healthy, and we look forward to sharing these unique experiences with our community this winter."
