WH-HolidayRecycling

REMINDER: GARBAGE AND RECYCLING SERVICES DURING THE HOLIDAYS

The City of Buffalo Garbage and Recycling Services operate normally on all holidays EXCEPT Christmas and New Year’s Day. When either of these two holidays falls on a weekday, we will operate one day later, through Saturday. This year, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day fall on a Wednesday. During those weeks, Wednesday’s garbage and recycling will be picked up on Thursday. Thursday’s garbage and recycling will be picked up on Friday. Friday’s garbage and recycling will be picked up on Saturday. Monday’s scheduled garbage pick-up will remain the same.

AFTER THE HOLIDAYS RECYCLING EVENT – JANUARY 4, 2020

Mayor Byron W. Brown also announced that the City of Buffalo will host an ‘After the Holidays Recycling and Electronics Waste Recycling’ event on January 4th at the City of Buffalo Engineering Garage, located at 1120 Seneca Street. City of Buffalo residents are encouraged to properly dispose of electronic equipment between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Items accepted at this free recycling event are computers, printers, toner cartridges, computer accessories, televisions, tablets, scanner, audio equipment, video equipment and circuit boards. Residents may also recycle Christmas tree lights, used clothing and clean white bulk Styrofoam.

Participants must certify that their items are household generated, as commercial waste will not be accepted.

“After the Holidays we are pleased to offer city residents the additional opportunity to properly and safely recycle unwanted computers and electronic items,” said Mayor Brown. “By participating in this event, residents are helping to reduce the amount of unsafe disposals in our area, which can be harmful to their health as well as the environment.”

THREE WAYS TO RECYCLE YOUR HOLIDAY TREE

  • The City of Buffalo will be accepting Christmas trees for recycling at the January 4th ‘After the Holidays Recycling and Electronics Waste Recycling’ event, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. City residents can bring their natural Christmas tree to 1120 Seneca Street where it will be chipped on site. Residents can take chips with them for re-use as mulch. Trees should be free of ornaments and tinsel.

  • The City will also have curbside collection of naturally grown Christmas trees for recycling. The collection is scheduled for the week of January 6th. This will be conducted by the City of Buffalo’s Department of Public Works, Parks & Streets as a way to help the environment and reduce costs associated with taking the trees to landfills.

To participate in this collection, City residents are asked to place trees out on their curb on their scheduled garbage pickup day. Do not place trees in garbage bags. Trees will be picked up separately from garbage, so City residents should not be concerned if they are left behind after garbage removal.

  • In addition to the one-week tree pick-up, the City is also offering drop-off opportunities at three locations in the city. These locations are as follows:

  • Cazenovia Park golf course parking lot, south of Seneca Street, at the foot of Wildwood

  • Shoshone Park parking lot, north off of Hertel, at the foot of Beard

  • 1120 Seneca Street rear parking lot between Babcock and Smith

Signage will be posted at all locations. These drop-off sites will be open from 7:30 am – 3:00 pm, Monday through Saturday, beginning December 31st and ending January 17th.
