BUFFALO– With the 2020 U.S. Census less than one year away - April 1, 2020 - Mayor Byron W. Brown and the growing Buffalo Count Us In 2020 Committee came together today to talk about the importance of the 2020 Census, as well as provide an update on the local public awareness campaign which includes a special informational section on the City’s Website. Although the 2020 census will be the first census to rely heavily on online responses, you can learn more about Census job and volunteer opportunities by going to www.buffalony.gov. Mayor Brown also encouraged city residents to attend the New York State Complete Count Commission public hearing in Buffalo, scheduled for Thursday, April 18, 2019 at 5 pm at Waterfront Elementary.
“It is critically important that every Buffalo resident is counted in the upcoming 2020 Census,” said Mayor Brown as part of the local effort to encourage city residents to participate in next year’s census count. “The data collected by the U.S. Census Bureau will not only determine our Congressional representation, but it will also help ensure we get our fair share of funding for critical programs. The need for a full, accurate count is vital to our city’s future, which is why we established the Buffalo Count Us in 2020 team.”
Every 10 years, the U.S Census Bureau conducts a population count of everyone living in the United States. Chaired by Mayor Brown and co-chaired by Jessica Lazarin, Director of the City of Buffalo Office of New Americans and Deputy Corporation Counsel for the City of Buffalo Law Department, the Buffalo Count Us In 2020 Committee consists of a growing list of members from Buffalo’s faith-based, philanthropic, business, not-profit, neighborhood, education, senior, LGBTQ+, people with disabilities, and immigrant communities who will inform residents about the purpose, content and various response opportunities for completing the Census. The City of Buffalo is also working in collaboration with the Erie County Complete Count Committee and the State of New York to ensure there is a full, fair, and informed census count.
The New York State Complete Count Commission is hosting seven public hearings across the state to gain public input and hear from Census experts and advocates. As one of the Commission Members, Mayor Brown will host Buffalo’s public hearing Thursday, April 18, 2019 at 5 pm at Waterfront Elementary/PS 95 Auditorium. The school is located at 95 Fourth Street in Buffalo.
