Mayor Brown Announced a Youth Job Fair to be Held at the Delavan Grider Community Center on Feb. 24

Mayor Byron W. Brown joined with Otis T. Barker, Commissioner of Community Services & Recreational Programming, to announce a first-of-its-kind Youth Job Fair, which will take place on Saturday, February 24, 2018.  The job fair, which will include around 50 employers, as well as representatives of local educational institutions and staffing agencies, will be held at the Delavan Grider Community Center, at 887 E. Delavan Ave., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“A top priority of my Administration is our continuing efforts to prepare our young people for the many great employment opportunities Buffalo has to offer. With our increasingly robust economy, which includes over $6.2 million in investment since 2010, and 12,000 new jobs coming on line in the next few years, it’s more important than ever for our young people to start building their work resumes,” Mayor Brown said.

Employers participating in the job fair will be offering a wide range of positions, in such fields as healthcare, banking, manufacturing, food service and production, insurance, and retail sales.  The extensive list of employers includes: the Buffalo Bisons, GEICO, M&T Bank, Wegmans, Tops Markets, Delta Sonic, ECMC, Kaleida Health, Rosina Foods, Mod Pac, Starbucks, and more.

“With the extensive and diverse list of employers, I’m certain there will be something of interest to every youngster seeking employment. I am looking forward to a full house at this one-stop youth job fair on Saturday, February 24th,” Mayor Brown added.

In addition to employers, several local colleges and universities, and employment agencies will have staff on hand to discuss potential educational career paths. Representatives of the new Northland Workforce Training Center will also be present to provide information on advanced manufacturing and energy career training classes which will debut this fall.

Commissioner Barker also announced it is now possible to apply on-line for the Mayor’s Summer Youth Internship Program via the City of Buffalo’s website.

“For the first time, those applying for the six-week paid summer internship program can fill out and submit their applications on-line.  We are anticipating that by providing easy, on-line access to the forms, we will increase the number of applicants,” Commissioner Barker said.

The online forms will be available at: http://www.buffalony.gov/mayorsummeryouthinternship.
Paper applications will continue to be available at all Buffalo Public and Charter Schools, City Community Centers and at City Hall, Room 1701.

The Mayor’s Summer Internship program is open to youth ages 14 to 21, who will be paid $10.40 per hour.  Since its inception in 2006, more than 22,000 young people have participated. Last summer, the City invested a record $1.7 million to offer learn and earn opportunities to nearly 1,700 youths. The deadline for Summer 2018 applications is Friday, April 27th.
