[ARCHIVED] Mayor Brown Recognizes Participants in the “2021 Let’s Do This” Recycling Challenge

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Mayor Byron W. Brown, joined by members of Buffalo block clubs, recognized participants who took part in the 2021 “Let’s Do This!” Recycling Challenge. He also announced that the WillowLawn Block Club’s entry for a city anti-litter campaign slogan contest won, with the submission of Buffalo Believes in KEEPING IT GREEN. We Keep our Cans Well Fed!

Mayor Brown stated, “As we continue to build an equitable and inclusive City of Opportunity, healthy communities and a healthy environment are important to the health and wellness of our people. Building on my Administration’s goals for a greener, more sustainable city, I am pleased to congratulate City of Buffalo Block Clubs for embracing the ‘2021 Let’s Do This Recycling Challenge’ for the fourth year.”

“Let’s Do This!” took place this past summer. Block clubs worked with their neighbors on ways to increase recycling participation during the contest period. Before the contest began, “Let’s Do This!” organizers logged the number of green recycling totes set out in each participating block club’s neighborhood.

Organizers did another count during the contest to compare figures with the original count. This friendly annual neighborhood event helped raise awareness about recycling, and sustainable living the City of Buffalo. It also focused on litter, and the profound impact it can have on property values and morale.

Mayor Brown launched the “Let’s Do This!” competition in 2017 to incentivize residents to participate in curbside recycling and help bring the City to its goal of 34% recycling. Since 2017, nearly 20,000 households and 75 individual Block Clubs citywide have answered the call and participated in this challenge. Simply by taking part in the challenge, participating block clubs won great prizes for their neighborhoods, including a $100 Gift Certificate from the Tool Library or Elber’s Nursery. 2021 “Let’s Do This!” Participants included:
