[ARCHIVED] Mayor Brown’s Summer City Fitness Workouts 2021

WH-SummerFitness2021-extended

Buffalo, NY – Mayor Byron W. Brown and Dr. Michael Edbauer, President of Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield of Western New York, today announced that Season Six of Summer City Fitness will be extended an additional

four weeks.

The series of free dance fitness classes held on Saturday mornings at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park were scheduled to wrap up this Saturday, August 7, but will now run through Saturday, September 4.

“Summer City Fitness has been a great success as part of our continued efforts to create a healthier and more vibrant city, and due to its great popularity, I’m pleased to announce the series will run an extra four weeks,”

Mayor Brown said. “Thank You to Dr. Michael Edbauer and Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, Lancia Woods of La Movement, and Allison DeHonney of Urban Fruits & Veggies for extending the program into September as we work together to help residents maintain even healthier lifestyles.”

The free, outdoor fitness series has attracted 261 participants, averaging 37 per class, since it kicked off on Saturday, June 5, which are record numbers for the six-year-old program. This compares to an average of 19 persons per class in 2018, 17 per class in 2019, and 18 per class in 2020.

The one-hour sessions, which start at 10 a.m. each Saturday, take place near the Martin Luther King, Jr. statue at MLK Jr. Park. The classes feature a mix of low-impact and high-impact dance fitness classes presented by Lancia “Lala” Woods, of La Movement. Allison DeHonney, of Urban Fruits & Veggies, is at the park each Saturday

offering free fruit to participants.

“Following months of sold-out Summer City Fitness classes, we are thrilled to extend our free series through Labor Day, in partnership with the City of Buffalo,” said Julie R. Snyder, Vice President of Community Affairs at Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield of Western New York.

The classes are open to individuals of all ages, regardless of fitness level and experience. All classes are weatherdependent.

Registration is recommended, simply visit www.bcbswny.com/play, walk-ups welcome.

More information, a full calendar of fitness classes and online registration can be found at: Bcbswny.com/scf. Pre-registration is highly-recommended as the popular classes fill up fast.
