Buffalo, NY – Mayor Byron W. Brown today welcomed youth to the start of Summer 2021 educational and sports camps organized by the Buffalo Police Athletic League (PAL).

“These enriching and fun camps will serve more than 5,000 youngsters this summer. These free PAL programs are a very popular way for our youth to keep their academic skills sharp, learn a new sport, and enjoy time with their peers in a safe and supportive environment,” Mayor Brown said.

PAL Executive Director Nekia Kemp said most of the camps are full, with waiting lists, reflecting the pent up interest of Buffalo families following last summer’s COVID-restricted opportunities.

“The start of PAL Summer Camp season is always exciting, but this year we’re elated to offer our diverse program curriculum. In addition to our educational and sports camps, we will also offer our PlayStreets outdoor sports and fitness program, which will take place three evenings a week at parks across Buffalo,” Kemp said.

This week’s PlayStreets events will take place at the Lovejoy neighborhood’s Houghton Park, at 1275 Clinton St. The sessions will be held Tuesday, July 13, Wednesday, July 14 and Thursday, July 15, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Participants in PlayStreets take part in a variety of sport and fitness activities, interact with mentors, receive free sports equipment, and a nutritious snack. The goal of PlayStreets is to inspire youth to stay healthy, active and fit.

Buffalo PAL PlayStreets is presented by Independent Health, with support from the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation and in partnership with City of Buffalo Block Clubs.
