[ARCHIVED] Mayor Brown Kicks Off Fire Prevention Month In Buffalo

Brown, joined by Buffalo Fire Commissioner William Renaldo, today issued a proclamation that declared October 2020 as Fire Prevention and Safety Month in the City of Buffalo. During the month, a number of COVID-19 pandemic-safe events are planned as part of Mayor Brown and the Buffalo Fire Department’s continued commitment to community outreach.

Mayor Brown stated, “Fire Prevention and Safety month in Buffalo will look a little different this year as we continue to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, but I’m pleased that, in partnership with the Buffalo Fire Department, we will host several drive-up and virtual fire safety events.”

This year’s theme is “Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen!”. According to the National Fire Protection Agency (“NFPA”), home cooking fires represent the leading cause of U.S. home fires. As part of fire prevention month in Buffalo, the following activities and events are planned.

  • The top of Buffalo City Hall was lit in RED on October 1st in honor of all fallen firefighters
  • A series of “Fire Prevention Messages” will be posted throughout October on the City’s traditional and digital communication platforms
  • A Virtual Fire House Tour will be posted on all of the City’s traditional and digital communication platforms during Fire Prevention Week (October 4-10
  • Mayor Brown and the BFD will host 4 Fire House Drive-Up Days
  • Mayor Brown, in partnership with the Buffalo Fire Department will also host 4 Fire House Dive-Up Days.

Free smoke detectors, coloring books and fire prevention safety tips will be distributed. Residents are asked to stay in their vehicles during the Fire House Drive-Up Days events. For more information, go to buffalony.gov/fireprevention.
