Buffalo, NY – Mayor Byron W. Brown today announced that City of Buffalo residents exceeded the 45% goal he set for last weekend’s 2020 Census response challenge. As of Monday, May 11th, the City of Buffalo’s response rate was 45.9%. Though it was important to achieve this goal, residents need to continue their participation in responding to the Census because accurate counting helps the City secure hundreds of millions of Federal dollars that can help Buffalo during the recovery phase of the COVID-19 emergency.
Mayor Brown stated, “I thank residents for helping us reach this important benchmark, but we have to keep going. We are still more than 12% below the national Census response rate. We need every resident living in the City of Buffalo to participate to help bring in federal funding to help us continue to build a better, stronger Buffalo in the wake of the pandemic. Organizers of the 2020 Taste of Buffalo today announced plans for a virtual version of this summer’s food festival. The 37th edition of the Taste, the nation’s largest two-day food festival, will take place on July 11 and July 12 on the event’s Facebook and Instagram channels. Taste of Buffalo at Home will embody the spirit of a live festival, bringing a fun, community-centric atmosphere into peoples’ homes with food, cooking demonstrations, live music, contests, games and more – all online.
The virtual festival features the new “Taste Takeout” initiative. Participating food trucks and wineries will prepare special food and beverage deals available for takeout at their establishments beginning that weekend and continuing the following week while supplies last. A full list of participants, menu items and information on how to order will be released in the coming weeks.
Mayor Brown stated, “Every year the Taste of Buffalo showcases the delicious foods our city and region are known for, as well as shining a light on our many diverse restaurants. Going to a virtual format will continue the tradition of the Taste of Buffalo by making great foods available via take-out and food trucks. The virtual and interactive food festival will allow the long tradition of the Taste of Buffalo to continue in a safe and innovative way."
Approximately $538,000 has been raised at the Taste of Buffalo for local charities including five $1,000 scholarships awarded annually to local high school seniors pursuing a culinary or hospitality-related degree. For more information, visit tasteofbuffalo.com.
Mayor Brown is reminding residents that tonight there is a 6 pm parking switchover, from 6 pm Monday to 6 pm Thursday. The alternate side parking on these streets is critical for emergency vehicle access.
Mayor Brown’s innovative Instagram challenge, #BuffaloPAUSE – Powered by AT&T, is asking local teens to showcase their creative spirit this week. As part of the Week 4 challenge, Mayor Brown is asking young City residents to develop creative ways to incorporate exercise into their daily chores. The goal is for participants to time themselves, safely finishing chores as fast as possible, before a timer runs out. Also, teens must post a video encouraging their friends to stay home and stay safe.
Mayor Brown, in partnership with AT&T, the Police Athletic League of Buffalo and Say Yes Buffalo, urges young residents to participate in #BuffaloPAUSE – Powered by AT&T. To enter the #BuffaloPAUSE challenge, participants must be between the ages of 13 and 18, reside in the City of Buffalo, and have a public profile on Instagram. All entries must take place at home indoors or outdoors following proper physical distancing guidelines. Only one submission per person or from a social media account can win each week. Tag your post with #BuffaloPAUSE on Instagram. Selected winners will be notified via Direct Message (DM) with a link to fill out a form so we can process your $20 gift card. All prizes and awards are funded by AT&T. The challenge runs now through the week of June 8th.
