Mayor Brown Marks the Start of Older Americans Month, Announcing a Calendar of City-Sponsored Events

Mayor Byron W. Brown today kicked-off the City of Buffalo’s annual celebration of Older Americans month by releasing a calendar of city-sponsored events for Buffalo’s seniors during the month of May.

“Here in Buffalo, we recognize that the countless contributions of our seniors make our City stronger. The City of Buffalo is committed to helping all individuals live longer, healthier lives in the communities of their choice for as long as possible,” Mayor Brown said.

The city’s celebration of its residents, who are age 55 and up, is part of the National Older Americans Month observation, which is marked annually in May. The theme for the 2019 observation is “Connect, Create, Contribute.”

“I encourage our seniors to Connect with friends, family, and services that support participation, Create by engaging in activities that promote learning, health, and personal enrichment, and Contribute time, talent, and life experience to benefit others,” Mayor Brown said.

The City’s senior events planned for May include:

Thursday, May 9/Friday, May 10 – Senior Citizens Craft Show & Sale Buffalo City Hall (Basement & 1st Floor Lobby)

8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.


Tuesday, May 21 – Mayor Byron W. Brown’s Annual Senior Health & Wellness Fair 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., Koessler Athletic Center at Canisius College, 1829 Main St.


Thursday, May 23 – Annual Senior Bowl-A-Thon

9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Kerns Avenue Bowling Center, 163 Kerns Avenue


Friday, May 31 – Mayor Byron W. Brown’s Annual Choice Senior Recognition Luncheon - “Doing Good for Good Sake”

11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Templeton Landing, 2 Templeton Terrace

 

Reminder: Nominations are now open for Mayor Byron W. Brown’s

Annual Choice Senior Awards, honoring Buffalo seniors who “Do good for good sake.” Requirements are as follows:

  • Nominee must be at least 55 years of age.
  • Nominees must be someone who freely offers to take part in a project, enterprise, or task, for the public good, and receives no pay for their efforts.
  • Submit their name, address, age, telephone number/cell phone, email address if appropriate, and a brief paragraph on why they are being nominated.

The deadline for nominations is May 15, 2019 at 4:00 p.m.

Nominations can be mailed to the City of Buffalo Division of Senior Services, 65 Niagara Sq. Rm. 8A, City Hall, Buffalo, NY 14202, Attn: Douglas Ruffin, dropped off at the Division of Senior Services Office, or emailed to: druffin@city-buffalo.com.
